Geoff Talley, our son, received his degree in Cinema-TV and went on to work for a talent agency, and as an assistant to a reality TV producer after some very lowly "grunt work" jobs for several film companies. It was tough, but he kept struggling! Over a year ago he was hired by the NFL Network and began to thrive. When NFL.com began, he was among the first "preditors" (producer/editors) hired there. Now he has had the privilege of going to the combines twice, and the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl each once.. He has gotten to talk with and interview numerous players and coaches. It's a guy's job to go to work and sit and watch football! Then he gets to edit and produce the video clips that we can watch on the internet. He is finally getting to edit and produce which is what he wanted to do since he was about 8 years old!
If you are no longer involved with the Trojan Club, perhaps you know who you could pass this message on to so that the group as it exists today can see how one young man has turned out! As you can probably tell, we are pretty proud parents!

Sincerely,

Jim and Tina Talley

Fight On! Craig Fertig passed away in Newport Beach and the USC community is mourning one of it's brightest stars.

Everyone knows of the Fertig to Rod Sherman pass in the last minute of the 1964 USC-Notre Dame game that brought USC back from a 17-0 halftime deficit to a 20-17 victory.

Craig's association with USC spanned over 50 years as a player, coach, administrator, and TV analyst. His association with the Trojan Club of San Diego was a treasure.

Coach Fertig would come down whenever we asked and he would regale us with stories of his career, his association with John McKay, and his observations on the football program. He would spend his allotted time with the organized program and then adjourn to the closest wine emporium with all those who wanted more, and hours later the stories would have to stop. He is personally responsible for helping us raise thousands of dollars that we contributed back to the athletic department to all help our teams strive for excellance.

I got to visit with the Coach for the last time at his normal tailgate spot before the Ohio State game. That will be one of the fond memories I take with me. I consider my life blessed to have the honor of calling Coach Fertig my friend.

Please keep the Fertig family, and the lovely and gracious Margaret O'Connor, in your thoughts and prayers. I hope you all got to see it either in person, at home, or at one of our three veiwing venues. At 35-3 it was a vicious beating and our Trojans looked good in all aspects of the game.

Cross country was in town for the Aztec Invitational last Saturday. The Trojan women finished sixth in the open/college division. Congratulations to Coach Walsh and the team. I had the honor of presenting them with the Trojan Club of San Diego's $1000 donation, which we do for all USC teams that visit us down here. We are able to do this on the behalf of all San Diego Trojans so big thanks go out to all who support our events.

Next up is USC at Oregon State on Thursday night, September 25. Kick-off is at 6:00 p.m. and we're the only game in town! Things should be rocking at our three viewing locations. If you want to get out of the house and enjoy the fellowship of other Trojans please join us at the PB Bar & Grill in Pacific Beach, the Del Mar Marriott, or, if you're really far north, the Bullpen in Encinitas. Complete addresses are on the home page. Pete Arbogast came to town to help whip the faithful into a frenzy! Does he think we'll win them all? No. Will we be favored in EVERY game? Yes! If they continue to play like Trojans we could be in for another great year!

The Women of Troy Soccer team opened their NCAA championship defense against USD, sans their gold winning star Amy Rodriguez. No worries, they still prevailed 1-0 and on behalf of the Club I was privileged to give Coach Ali and the team our $1000 donation which we give to all USC teams visiting San Diego.

Come out next weekend, August 30, and join your fellow Trojans for the USC @ UVA game. Kick-off is 12:30 p.m. PDT and we'll be hosting viewing parties at the PB Bar & Grill in Pacific Beach, the Del Mar Marriott at I-5 and Carmel Valley Road, and at the Bullpen in Encinitas at Encinitas Blvd and El Camino Real. Get off the couch and join us! Complete addresses are on the homepage.

The next football luncheon is September 12 featuring USC all-american Duane Bickett. First up is TCSD Day at the Races on August 17. Contact Tom Schiff at tschiff@aol.com for details and reservations.

The Voice of the Trojans Pete Arbogast comes to town on August 22 for our first fall luncheon (and a little bodysurfing on August 23). All our luncheons are held at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Kearny Mesa. The lovely and gracious Lindsay Soto moderated a very informative, and funny, evening as the coaches conspired to fire up the faithful as we wait for next season.

Keep your fingers crossed, but it sounds like, if the athletes play up to their potential, that we should have great seasons in both football and basketball. But, the best part of the evening was the quality time that both Pete and Tim spent with each and every table and guest. And, the highlight was the attendence of both John Robinson and Bob Boyd. (We even made Scott Wolf's column as a result.)

The Trojan Club of San Diego was honored to present its Don Clausen Memorial Award to our volunteer of the year, Carol Wootton. Carol has been the greatest help, running our raffles, participating in all our activities, and helping in every way with a smile on her face. She's an absolute pleasure, a great Trojan, and unquestionably our Don Clausen Memorial Award honoree.

Pat Park was named the winner of our Marv Goux Award for the TCSD board member who most emulates the spirit of Marv Goux. Pat was traveling and we'll make a big fuss over him at our first football luncheon on August 22.

So, all in all, it was a great week for the Trojan Club of San Diego. We spent Sunday manning our annual water station for the Rock and Roll Marathon and then Wednesday night with two of our favorite coaches.

Things slow down a bit for the next two months, but football starts in August and we already have Pete Arbogast, Ben Malcomson, and JJ Jackson lined up as speakers for our fall programs and John Robinson said he was available if he wasn't on the road, so watch the website and make sure you save the dates of all our fall football luncheons. Information regarding our rooter buses to the games is also posted on the website.

Have a great summer! Fight On! Spring football started today!

Actually, congratulations to the basketball team. They may have been "one and done" in the NCAA's, but OJ Mayo to the contrary notwithstanding, I think they over-achieved given that they had no bench and lost a couple of good ones to the NBA last year. So, congratulations and thank you from your friends in San Diego.

Just a reminder that we've got lots coming up in the next couple of months. The San Diego Crew Classic is April 5/6 all day long on Mission Bay. Head to Crown Point for the best viewing and join the Trojan Club and the crew teams at their barbeque. We're buying!

April 21 is our Spring Dinner with Wide Recievers Coach John Morton. All the information is on the website. The NEW website! www.trojanclubofsandiego.com

Speaking of the new website, it's meant to be interactive so please join up and enjoy the whole website. Many thanks to Travis Walton of The Connection Center for making this happen for us.

Finally, mark your calendars for the Pete Carroll/Tim Floyd Dinner on June 4. And, if you want to have some fun, come out for the Trojan water station at mile 19.5 of the Rock & Roll Marathon on June 1.

Spring football started today and all is right in the world.

Fight On! Our basketball team is starting its run in the NCAAs, spring football starts next week, and your Trojan Club is gearing up.

First, USC opens against Kansas State in the first round of March Madness this Thursday. If you want to watch the game with your fellow Trojans come and join Trojan Great Monroe Nash at the home of the Trojan Club of San Diego, the Ramada Inn & Conference Center. 5550 Kearny Mesa Road. Clairemont Mesa Blvd. at the 163. Tip-off is at 4:10 p.m.

Next up you're all invited for a day in the sun at the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday, April 6. It's bright and early in the morning, but we've invited the Trojan Marching Band down to help root on our mens and ladies crew teams.

April 21 brings our annual Spring Dinner with wide receiver coach John Morton. It will be at the Ramada Inn starting at 5:30 p.m. Make reservations through our new website at www.trojanclubofsandiego.com.

Speaking of the new website, it's all up-to-date in the calendar section. So, please check it out for all the USC teams that are visiting San Diego. And, mark YOUR calendars, the coaches are coming! Pete Carroll and Tim Floyd will be down here on June 4.

Finally, on a personal note, I had a blast at the USC Alumni Volleyball game last Saturday at Galen Center. Coach Ferguson, Coach Holland, and all the players and fellow alums made it another day to remember. Galen is a long way from the old North Gym! I will always be the oldest one on the floor as I played on the first NCAA team, but everyone indulged the Old Guy and I want to thank them all.

Fight On! Many thanks to the Lads and to all who joined us at our new "official" home, The Ramada Inn & Conference Center in Kearny Mesa.

Brandon and Darrell showed a video of most of our verballed recruits for 2008. It looks like a studly group and that we've filled many areas of need, mostly on the lines.

This Saturday night, February 2nd, my beloved volleyball team comes to town to play a match against UCSD. (For those who don't know, I played on USC's first two NCAA VB teams in 1970-71. Seems like just yesterday!) The match starts at 7:00 p.m. at RIMAC Center on the UCSD campus. It should be a fun way to spend Super Bowl Eve so if you're looking for a cheap date, come on over.

Ray Weber and the basketball fans have sold out all 71 of our tickets for the USC vs. Oregon State game on February 23. There's still room on the bus, but not much. For your viewing pleasure, we'll be hosting the party for the USC @ Arizona game on February 28 at the Ramada Inn. Keep checking the website for details.

Upcoming events include the Crew Classic on April 6, a position coach's dinner in late March or April, and the Rock & Roll Marathon water station. If you're interested in joining us on February 23 for the game agains Oregon State please let us know. Again, the information or the link is on the homepage (Do you see a recurring theme here? Check the website often!).

For great Trojan Family fun mark your calendars for Sunday, April 6th, and come spend a day at Mission Bay for the annual Crew Classic. There will be a team tent, food, and The USC Marching Band. Come and lend your support and have a fun day in the sun.

Keeping checking the website as we are in the process of scheduling our Spring Football Dinner with a position coach. The exact date is subject to the coach's schedule, but look toward the end of March.

That's it for now. Keep checking the website for all our upcoming events. Congratulations to Coach Carroll and the whole football team, especially the seniors. What a run it's been!

I know everyone that went to the game had a blast, especially those smart enought to ride the Famous TCSD Rooter Bus. Those of us who stayed in San Diego had a grand time at our "Official" host hotel, the Ramada Inn & Conference Center. They put out a super buffet and we ate and drank our way through SC's great victory over the Illini.

We have a busy month coming up starting with a viewing party for the USC vs. UCLA basketball game on Saturday, January 19 at 12:30 p.m. at the Ramada Inn & Conference Center, 5550 Kearny Mesa Road, San Diego 92111. If you think you'll be coming please RSVP to Ray Weber or me (our emails are in the contact section) so the restaurant will be ready for us.

On January 24 we welcome two great Trojans, Darrell Rideaux and Brandon Hancock, to the Ramada for a luncheon to celebrate the 2007 season and the 2008 Rose Bowl, and to look forward to the 2008 season. Letter of Intent Day is the first Wednesday in February so we can expect Darrell and Brandon to have lots to say about the potential "nuggets" in the new class of recruits.

Something near and dear to me, Men's Volleyball, comes to San Diego to face the Tritons of UCSD on Saturday night, February 2 at RIMAC Center at 7:00 p.m. While the plans aren't complete, pencil in a dinner with the team and chalk-talk before the match. Please continue to monitor the website as we will update it there as soon as the plans are finalized.

Last, but certainly not least, ROAD TRIP! The TCSD has 50 tickets together at Galen Center for the February 23 game against Oregon State. The cost is $30 and you provide the transportation or $50 per ticket and we provide the transportation. If you can get up to LA and back for $20, good on you!

So, it's a busy January and February. Just because football is over it doesn't mean we cease being Trojans. And, your Trojan Club is going to keep it going even bigger and better in 2008.

It all starts with the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day against the University of Illinois. If you're not going to the game please make plans to join us at the "official" home of the Trojan Club of San Diego, the Ramada Inn & Conference Center in Kearny Mesa (5550 Kearny Mesa Blvd). Kick off is at 2:00 p.m. and we'll be there to watch all the action with food, fun, and raffles.

Next up is the USC vs. UCLA basketball game on January 19th. Again, we'll meet at the Ramada Inn at 12:30 p.m. to watch the game.

To wrap up the 2007 football season, former Trojan greats Darrell Rideaux and Brandon Hancock will visit us for a luncheon program on Thursday, January 24th. We'll review the 2007 season, the 2008 Rose Bowl, recruiting and Letter of Intent Day, and look forward to the 2008 season.

February 2nd brings the Men's Volleyball team to town to play UCSD. In the works are a luncheon centered around Letter of Intent Day featuring Darrell Rideaux, Brandon Hancock, and, hopefully, the lovely and gracious Lindsay Soto; a team dinner with the Men's Volleyball team when they come to San Diego to beat up on UCSD, and a spring dinner featuring a position coach from the football team.

We endeavor to provide great events that keep San Diego Trojans in touch with USC. It's always great to be a Trojan, especially if it means meeting a Big 10 team in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day after beating the gutty little bruins to get there. And, oh by the way, how many coaches have now been sacked after fruitless encounters with the Mighty Trojans?

While we're at it, congratulations to the Mens Water Polo team who finished second in the NCAA's over the weekend, and to the Womens Soccer Team who have reached the NCAA semi-finals and all they have to do is bury the bruins and they're in the finals as well.

Many thanks to John "JJ" Jackson and Garry Paskeiwitz for slugging their way through the horrendous rain-soaked traffic to get down here and address our final football luncheon of the year. Thanks also to Ron Fletcher for stepping in and keeping the crowd pacified while we waited for our two lost souls. For the record, JJ got the number of touchdowns given up by USC correct, for the second year in a row, while missing slightly on the offensive production (He predicted 35-7).

Your Trojan Club while be sponsoring at least one bus to the Rose Bowl game, so if you're interested make your call now (see the homepage of this website for the phone numbers) so we make sure we can accommodate everyone who wants to ride.

Continue to check the website for our upcoming events including (but not limited to) a recruiting recap luncheon in late January, an event surrounding the Mens Volleyball visit to San Diego, and a position coach's dinner in early spring.

Thank you for all your support of TCSD's activities. I like our chances against ASU and ucla, and if we win out good things will happen for our 10-2 Trojans.

Big props to all the San Diego Trojans who made the journey north to sit in that godawful weather and help bring us home a victory over the Bears. Sitting in my nice warm living room I could still hear the Trojan faithful and the Band much louder than the Cal section.

JJ is next on the agenda. Make your plans and mark your calendars for November 30 when our final football luncheon will take place featuring John "JJ" Jackson. JJ is a former USC All-American and scholastic All-American as well. Now with Fox Sports covering high school and college football, he is our traditional season wrap-up speaker and always draws a huge crowd. So, make your reservations today. We'll review the 2007 season, scout the ucla game, and look forward to our bowl appearence.

Speaking of the USC-ucla game, there's still room, I think, on the rooter bus to the Coliseum. It doesn't get any better than a bunch of Trojans having the chance to talk some football and share some stories from a storied past. The guys were great, informative and entertaining, and if you missed it you missed a special afternoon.

Our next, and final, football luncheon will be November 30 featuring John "JJ" Jackson. JJ is a Trojan All-American and current FSN football commentator. It's a tradition that JJ close our annual luncheon series and he's always been well received.

Homecoming was a blast! We hosted two full buses, Ray Weber, Carol Wooten, and Pat Park did land office business at our booth across from Tommy Trojan, and, oh yeah, the football team didn't do too badly either, especially if you like defense.

If you're not lucky enough to make the trip to San Francisco for next weekend's game with Cal, please make plans to join us at the Bullpen in Encinitas. As always, check the homepage of this website for all information regarding away game viewing, bus reservations, football luncheons, and all our other TCSD events.

I guess that's it, except for one more thing:

Fight On! The other half is physical." I think that just about covers it for our beloved Trojans this year. We have the talent, do we have the desire?

We are the Trojan Family and we're all IN! Homecoming is this weekend and it's time to right the ship and beat up on the Beavers. The Trojan Club of San Diego still has a few seats on the rooter buses so if you need a ride, make a reservation and join the fun.

This Friday, November 2 is our fourth fall football luncheon featuring former USC quarterbacks Rob Preston and Gordon Adams. Rob and Gordon were teammates on the 1978 National Championship team and backed up All-American Paul McDonald in 1979. They have some insight regarding being on the "best team in the history of college football" and could help us understand living up to high expectations. Remember, that 1979 team had Charles White, Marcus Allen, Anthony Munoz, Brad Budde, Ronnie Lott and Paul McDonald among its future NFLers. It will be a fun time so call now and make reservations. As with the buses, all the information you need will be on the home page.

Look for our booth at Homecoming between Tommy Trojan and the bookstore and stop by and say hi. Then wear Cardinal to the game and bring your Trojan spirit. The team needs our support.

Fight On! Bring on the Ducks!

The Trojan Club will be meeting at the Bullpen in Encinitas to watch the Oregon game. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. So, make plans to join us for lunch, libations, laughs, and a thorough licking of the Ducks. We'll have TCSD merchandise and a raffle, so bring a couple extra bucks.

Make plans to attend our next football luncheon which will be November 2 at the Bayview Restaurant on the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Our guest speakers will be Gordon Adams and Rob Preston. Gordon and Rob were highly recruited local quarterbacks who had the pleasure of playing behind All-American Paul McDonald. Do we have a quarterback controversy? How does a coach keep all the "nuggets" happy when there is only one ball and eleven guys on the field. Gordon and Rob can tell us what it's like and give us their take on our first eight games. It was a real trip down memory lane and I’m sure that the 100+ San Diego Trojans enjoyed being in the presence of two legends.

I’d like to thank Trojan Bill Dodds and the Hotel del Coronado for hosting Tom and Craig and for helping make this visit as special for them as it was for all of us in attendance.

Now it’s time for Notre Dame and let’s hope that our beloved Trojans get stitched up and administer a vicious beating on the hapless Irish. No one said going undefeated was going to be easy! Props to our Mighty Trojans for beating UW despite playing one of the worst games I’ve seen in years. Hopefully, they got a year’s worth of miscues out of their system in that one game.

Your Trojan Club of San Diego has lots going on in our efforts to give you a vehicle to support the USC Trojans. We are running two buses to both the Stanford and Arizona games. All the information you need to make a reservation is on this website.

And, we have a very special luncheon on October 12 at the Bayview Restaurant starring the legendary voice of the Trojans, Tom Kelly, and his former broadcast partner and Trojan great Craig Fertig. A little September rain couldn’t slow down the Mighty Trojans nor dampen the enthusiasm of those lucky enough to have a ticket to the game. All and all, another good weekend for the Trojan Faithful, especially if you had the good sense to join your fellow San Diego Trojans for Coach Bill Cunerty’s luncheon talk last Friday.

I’d like to send a special thanks to Bill for venturing down from The OC to enlighten and amuse the assembled Trojans. He really is the best speaker you’ve never heard of. If you see him on our schedule again, do yourself a favor and join us. If you love football and Trojan football especially, you’ll love hearing what Bill has to say.

But, that was last Friday. This weekend the Trojans are in Seattle and your Trojan Club of San Diego will be at the Bullpen in Encinitas at 5:00 p.m. Saturday night. We’ll have Trojan camaraderie, raffles, and SDTC merchandise, so if you’re anywhere near Encinitas, join us!

Finally, it’s never too early to mark your calendars for our next football luncheon to be held on October 12. This will be a very special luncheon as we’re proud to present two of the absolute legends in Trojan history, Tom Kelly and Craig Fertig. It’s the week before the Notre Dame game, so the stories will be flying. And, when you’re making your plans, don’t forget to set aside an extra $20.00 for Tom’s new book which he will happily autograph for you.

That’s it, the Bullpen this Saturday night, USC vs. Stanford on October 6 (don’t forget the SDTC Party bus to the game), and the Kelly/Fertig luncheon on October 12. All the information you need is on the website and if you’re reading this, you’re in the right spot!

Fight On! It was Pete Carroll’s 56th birthday and my 28th wedding anniversary. The Women of Troy bageled Purdue 3-0 in volleyball, Sarah Cocco came from 100 meters down in the last 800 meters to win the 63rd Aztec Invitational Cross Country meet, and, oh yeah, our football team buried Nebraska 49-31, and it wasn’t that close! Congratulations all the way around!

Bring on the PAC-10!

Our huge crowd at the Bullpen enjoyed the game, the environment, and Trojan camaraderie. Many thanks to our Trojan Club hosts Jerry, Bud, Tom, and Shelley. The next away game is September 29 against the Dawgs of UW. Make plans to join us at the Bullpen in Encinitas.

Speaking of making plans and speaking of speaking, now would be a good time to make your reservations for our next football luncheon this Friday, September 21. You’re on the website, so go back to the home page for phone numbers and call in your reservation today. Bill Cunerty is our guest speaker and I’m not sure we’ve ever had a better one. We had a great win in Nebraska, but it wasn’t a perfect game and the PAC-10 schedule presents challenges that Bill will break down for us. If you love football, especially Trojan football, you won’t want to miss Bill’s presentation.

So, we had a good week and we’ve got an even better one coming up. See you at MCRD on Friday, the Coliseum on Saturday, and the Bullpen on the 29th.

Fight On! Beat the Cougars!

Dan Orr
President 2007-2009

President's Message (9/10/07)

September 10, 2007

It’s a big week for USC Football as our Mighty Trojans travel to Lincoln, NE to take on the Cornhuskers. It doesn’t get any better than two storied programs in a classic venue. This is where we establish our bonafides for the media and other non-believers. No App State’s on the Trojan schedule!

Please make plans to join the San Diego Trojan Family at the Bullpen in Encinitas this Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. kick-off. Besides Trojan camaraderie we’ll have Trojan merchandise and a raffle for very cool stuff.

If you’re up early and anywhere near Balboa Park our Trojan cross-country team will be participating in the Aztec Invitational. The Women of Troy toe the starting line at 9:00 a.m. from the vicinity of Sixth and Laurel Streets.

Finally, make your reservations today to attend our next Trojan Club Fall Football Luncheon, September 21, featuring the wit and wisdom of Coach Bill Cunerty. If true insight from a coach’s perspective is what you’re looking for, this is the luncheon to attend. We’ll have Idaho and Nebraska under our belts and some idea of what kind of team we are. Bill just retired as head coach of Saddleback College’s football AND golf teams where he is the only coach in history to have won numerous state championships in BOTH sports. He is also co-founder of the Trojan Fantasy Flashback Camp, and holds numerous prep camps for the NFL combine and college camps. Needless to say, he knows all the players, literally and figuratively. Contact Ray Weber at raycweb@aol.com to make your reservations.

That’s it! Balboa Park and the Bullpen this Saturday and Bill Cunerty at MCRD on September 21. Mark your calendars and try to join us.

Fight On! I don’t pretend to understand all the Xs and Os, but I’m happy to remind you that someone who DOES understand all the Xs and Os will be at our September 21 football luncheon. Bill Cunerty will be here just in the nick of time to explain what was going on in the Idaho game and review the Nebraska game. So, if you want the inside scoop on this year’s Trojan football team, this is the luncheon to attend.

The Trojan Club of San Diego was very active this opening week of Trojan Football. We ran two buses to the Coliseum and Tom Schiff was our host for a large contingent of Trojans at our official game-viewing venue, The Bullpen in Encinitas. Thanks to everyone who organized, hosted, or participated in these events. We still have some room on the buses for the remaining games and the more the merrier at the Bullpen. Look for a big crowd when we gather on September 15 to watch our Mighty Trojans treat Nebraska as though they were Idaho.

Speaking of September 15, if you want to make it a day of Trojan athletics please note that the women’s cross-country team will be participating in the Aztec Invitational that morning. If this is the meet I think it is it takes place in Balboa Park, usually in the morning. The cross-country team comes to San Diego again on October 6 for the UCSD Triton Invitation.

Please keep checking this website as all our events are listed. And, please call past-president Ray Weber and make your reservations for the remaining four fall football lunches. September 21, Bill Cunerty; October 12, Tom Kelly and Craig Fertig; November 2, Rob Preston and Gordon Adams; and November 30, John “JJ” Jackson.

Fight On! The overflow crowd got the up close and personal observations on this year’s team from the man who will call every play of this exciting season. This team is so deep and so talented that we went over an hour of talk and Q&A and NEVER mentioned Keith Rivers or Brian Cushing!

Bring on the Vandals!

I am pleased to confirm the rest of our luncheon line-up. Please make plans to join us as we’ve put together a terrific series of speakers to enlighten and amuse the San Diego Trojan faithful.
Bill Cunerty will join us on September 21, the Friday before the Washington State game. Bill played at USC under John McKay and just recently retired as head coach of Saddleback JC. Bill is the only head coach to win multiple state championships in two sports as he lead Saddleback’s football AND golf teams. For years he has run a football camp that prepares athletes for the NFL combine and also current players for their upcoming college seasons. Bill’s a terrific Xs & Os guy and he comes to us right after the Nebraska game so we should have some idea of how good we are.

October 12 will be a special luncheon, as we will be joined by two legendary Trojans, Tom Kelly and Craig Fertig. This is the week before USC travels to Notre Dame so the stories and reminisces will be flying. With luck, Tom will have copies of his new book we can buy and have signed.

On November 2 we will welcome Rob Preston and Gordon Adams. These two five-star quarterbacks will tell us how it is to be “The Man” and then end up behind a two-time all-American and how one stays motivated and ready. This insight will be key for us to understand the current dynamic on a stacked Trojan team.

The great John “JJ” Jackson is our traditional “closer.” On November 30 we’ll be looking towards UCLA, reviewing the season, and planning for a bowl game. It’s always a great crowd and a great time.

You’re reading this, so you’re on the website and that’s the place to be for up-to-date information on all our activities and events. I want to thank everyone who comes to our events and helps keep the Trojan Family and spirit alive and well in San Diego.

Fight On!

Dan Orr
TCSD President 2007-2009
USC Class of 1971

Trojan Club of SD THANKS ALL for great June 11, Coaches Tour Dinner !

Hello SD Trojans ,

A BIG '' FIGHT ON'' to Coaches Carroll and Floyd, to ou r friends at Heritage Hall, to the Marina Marriott, the TMB and USC Song Girl s, TCSD volunteers, and to the well over 600 attendees, who all pitc hed in for a RECORD CROWD and a very spirited SD stop on Coaches Tour 2007 ! Great Crew Classic !! [ Recap]

From: Ray Weber
Date: Sunday, April 01, 2007 9:53 PM

As President of the Trojan Club of San Diego, I want to take a moment and thank all of you that made it out to Mission Bay this weekend to support our 2 Rowing teams ! The Men's Club team is a great bunch and a pleasure to be around with great, great leadership in Coach Gene! They are a program on the rise !

As you know by now, the USC Women's team was the talk of the day, just cleaning up in 3 races and just missing in a 4 th. My understanding is that they will easily be ranked in the Top 5 in the nation in the new rankings this week ! They were nothing short of superb in the water all weekend - see www.usctrojans.com and www.crewclassic.org. for race details !

Bringing the TMB down each year brings so many smiles and so much pleasure to most attendees at the Classic and we should continue to look to do this for years to come, in my opinion! The smiles and appreciation on the faces of the young , victorious Trojan athletes [ and their friends and families] as the teams were serenaded with ''Tribute'', won't be forgotten anytime soon. The USC crowd was very big this year, lot's of appreciative parents, alum,SD locals and athletes, all dressed in Cardinal ! The turnout was excellent , the SC tent was festive, the USC and SDTC banners were hung, great BBQ, quality teams, Coaches, and people and the TMB performing in all corners of the venue, ...just puts it over the top ! Many locals and parents of the athletes, some who were experiencing their very first USC Event , made it a point to thank me / us for just being out there and for helping to provide a quality setting at the USC tent, for making them feel most welcome, and most of all ....for helping to bring down the band to make for the USC 'Spirit of Troy! '

Thanks again to the TROJAN CLUB of SAN DIEGO for being the ones to come through for our traveling Trojans ! "It's truly an honor to be elected to this fraternity. I've been in college for three years and it's the first time I've been invited into a fraternity."

Bush received 2,541 points to finish 933 points ahead of Young, with Leinart a distant third. Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn was fourth.

The 784 first-place votes received by Bush was the second-most in Heisman history, topped only by another famous USC runner -- O.J. Simpson, who had 855 in 1968. Bush was first in all six regions and appeared on 99 percent of the ballots, also a Heisman record.

"I was in shock because Vince Young and Matt are such great players," Bush said.

Bush and Leinart will be the first Heisman winners to play in a college game together when USC goes for a third straight national title against Texas in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4.

"It's a special opportunity," Bush said. "It'd be even more special if we win this game."

Bush and Leinart are the third teammates to win the award in consecutive seasons and the first since Army's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis did it in 1945-46.

When Bush's name was called, he bent over in his chair, clasped his hands and slowly headed for the podium after hugging his mother, stepfather and brother.

Dressed in a three-piece pinstriped suit, Bush choked back tears while thanking his family "for their unconditional love and support throughout my life."

This year's Heisman race appeared tight for much of the season, with Bush making a big statement in mid-October against Notre Dame. He ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns in South Bend, and provided the final push Leinart needed to score the winning TD in the closing seconds of a classic 34-31 victory.

But Bush was relatively low-key after the Notre Dame game and Young seemed to have pulled ahead, with talk that two candidates from USC would cancel each other out.

That was until Nov. 19, when Bush left Fresno State repeatedly grasping at air and onlookers grasping for superlatives to describe a performance that had to be seen to be truly appreciated.

He ran for 295 yards, racked up 513 all-purpose yards -- the second-highest total in NCAA history -- and USC escaped with a 50-42 victory.

If there was still any doubt Bush was best, he dispelled it against UCLA, running for 260 yards and two touchdowns in a 66-19 victory. Only the lopsided score kept Bush from doing even more damage.

Asked for a Heisman moment from the season, Bush said, "I don't think I can pick one."

Of course not. He's already ripped off 36 plays of at least 20 yards this season.

As the Trojans completed another perfect regular season, it seemed a foregone conclusion Bush would become the fifth USC tailback to win the Heisman, following Mike Garrett, Simpson, Charles White and Marcus Allen.

The 200-pounder from Spring Valley, Calif., just outside of San Diego, ran for 1,658 yards this season, a dizzying average of 8.9 yards per carry, while leading the nation in all-purpose yards with 217.9 per game.

USC now has produced seven Heisman winners, matching the record held by Notre Dame, and an unprecedented three in four years, starting with quarterback Carson Palmer in 2002.

Now Bush will have to make the kind of decision Leinart did last season: Stay in school or go.

Leinart surprised many by returning to USC for his senior year when he could have entered the NFL draft and become an instant millionaire.

"Matt, what more can I say?" Bush said. "Your decision to come back has changed my life."

By staying, Leinart made a run at joining Ohio State's Archie Griffin as the only other two-time Heisman winner, and helped USC extend its winning streak to 34 straight games, heading into the Rose Bowl.

Leinart said he voted for Bush first, Young second and left his third-place vote blank.

"I knew I was going to get third," Leinart said. "I wanted to go on stage as a past winner because I knew I wasn't going to win. The right guy won."

Bush has said he'll decide about the NFL after the BCS title game.

Young, also a junior, appears to have a bright NFL future, though he isn't quite the can't-miss prospect Bush and Leinart have been labeled.

Young said he intends to stay at Texas for another year -- and perhaps another shot at the Heisman.

"Right now, I feel like I let my guys down," Young said. "Right now, I feel like I let my family down."

Bush's career has been in a steady ascent since he arrived at USC. He rushed for 537 yards as a freshman and 908 as a sophomore, when he finished fifth in the Heisman voting.

Heading into the 2005 season, Bush was determined to show he was more than just a scatback with fancy moves. He worked out with San Diego Chargers star LaDainian Tomlinson, harder than he's ever worked before.

He returned to school bigger and stronger and, on a team filled with All-Americans, became the No. 1 attraction in the nation.

(Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. Same with John Walker and a lot of the other guys, but Rivers was most evident to us as he got so many requests wearing his big number 55. I met a few of the freshman like Cary Harris, Patrick Turner, Will Harris and Rey Maualuga to name a few and they are all kids we can be proud of. They all seemed amazed at the amount of support at the Salute to Troy.

[Link to Pictures]

USC Story: The Orr Family Marathon

From: Ray Weber
Subject: Kudos to the Orr's !!
